Hello, I’m Dr Sarju Patel
I'm a Reader in Medical Education at Cardiff University and Co-Chair of the Medical Schools Council EDI Alliance, dedicated to dismantling structural racism and building truly inclusive workplaces in healthcare and higher education. Through evidence-based strategies and collaborative partnerships, I work with organisations to transform culture, challenge inequity, and create environments where everyone can thrive and belong.!

Championing EDI
Dr. Patel is at the forefront of the fight against structural racism in healthcare and higher education. As Co-Chair of the Medical Schools Council EDI Alliance and former Associate Dean for EDI, he leads national initiatives that drive systemic change across institutions. His contributions have shaped policy through Welsh Government consultations on Anti-Racist Wales and LGBTQ+ inclusivity, while his research tackles differential attainment gaps and bias in medical education. From chairing Cardiff University's Race Equality Charter application to developing innovative EDI training tools, his work transforms intentions into tangible, lasting impact!
"We believe that the best education happens in partnership."
Following a student nomination, I was selected as one of three academic staff members at Cardiff University recognised for embodying this principle. In this short clip, I discuss what partnership in education means to me and the equality, diversity and inclusion work I'm involved in at the university.

EDI Toolkit
A free EDI toolkit from Cardiff University that supports more inclusive spaces through better conversations. Through a range of resources, it explores racial bias, racism, and race as a social construct, and offers practical guidance to help turn awareness into action.

Academic Excellence
With over 25 years at Cardiff University, Dr. Patel bridges biomedical research and medical education. As a Reader in the Centre for Medical Education and Year 2 Director, he shapes healthcare education through innovative curriculum design and compassionate student support. His work has earned Cardiff University's Excellence in EDI Award and recognition as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Community Impact
Since 2018, Dr. Patel has led the PACE project, partnering with secondary schools in disadvantaged areas of Cardiff to inspire Year 9-11 pupils through hands-on medical education experiences. Through weekly sessions and summer schools led by student volunteers, PACE opens doors to university and healthcare careers for young people traditionally excluded from these professions.
